Job Overview
As a Relief Counsellor for Between Friends, you will support groups of all ages, functioning either as Senior or Camp Counsellor while at Camp Bonaventure. You are responsible for implementing safe, engaging, and inclusive programming to ensure a fun camp experience for all. You can see the posting for Senior and Camp Counsellors for more details. You may expected to float into any of our summer programs. This can include: Camp Bonaventure, I.C.A.N!, W.E.S.O.A.R!, and Adventurers. You will be stationed at Camp Bonaventure, but may not always work at Camp. W.E.S.O.A.R!, and Adventurers will typically take place in the evenings and on weekends. At Camp, you will be placed in a different group daily or weekly based on the needs of Camp, filling in for either more support or sick coverage. This position directly reports to the Camp Supervisor, Programming.
- Ability to act as a Senior or Camp Counsellor, in the event of support, coverage, staff absences, etc.
- Provide ongoing support and feedback to Senior and Camp Counsellors with which you are placed
- Responsible for the direct personal care and supervision of up to 20 campers within a ratio of 1:3 - 1:4
- Ensuring all program activities are planned with the highest standard of quality and safety; this will include but is not limited to; age appropriate, variety of activities, adaptable to different abilities
- Administering any medications to participants at program; training will be provided
- Effectively support campers with additional behavioural needs
- Follow up with the appropriate supervisors in the event of any emergency situations

- Fun - You look for ways to incorporate excitement and joy into day-to-day experiences. Previous experience working at camps, considered an asset.
- Intentional - Your actions are purposeful and value driven. You are a direct and clear communicator. You have previous experience working with people with disabilities, ability to quickly and independently solve problems in high stress situations.
- Caring - You welcome and celebrate people with empathy and dignity. You value working with individuals to create adaptations and modifications to ensure an inclusive experience for all. This includes providing support to participants requiring lifts and transfers, and personal care support.
- Easeful - You strive to create accessible and inclusive spaces that remove barriers to access. You have experience adapting activities, programming, to meet the needs of everyone. Previous experience developing and implementing programming is required. Access to your own vehicle during working hours.
- Safe - You value creating and maintaining safe spaces to promote inclusion and fun! Must pass a Screening Process including a Backcheck search and an Intervention Record Check completed by Alberta Human Services. Must be able to provide proof of current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification, prior to the start date.
Overview of Working Hours:
- This role is expected to work a minimum of 40 hours a week, but may vary based on organizational needs
- Working hours will primarily occur between 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, but some work may occur in the evenings and weekends. This may include Camp Clean-Up and Staff Meetings
- Mandatory Camp Wide Training occurs June 13, 2025 - June 27, 2025, typically from 8:30 - 4:30, but schedule will be released closer to the start date
- Camp Bonaventure runs from June 30, 2025 - August 22, 2025, excluding Statutory Holidays
Working Location(s):
- Camp Training will occur at Camp Bonaventure Sandy Beach (1215 50th Ave SW)
- During Camp, you will be placed at one of these 2 locations:
Camp Bonaventure Sandy Beach (1215 50th Ave SW)
Camp Bonaventure Thorncliffe-Greenview (5000 Centre St N)
- This role may also be asked to assist at either Camp depending on the needs of the different sites
- Other program locations will be revealed when support is requested
Job Requirements:
- Must be 18 years old or over.
- Must pass a Screening Process including a Backcheck search and an Intervention Record Check completed by Government of Alberta
- Must be able to provide proof of current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification, prior to the start date
- Able to adapt to changing circumstances, participant needs, and organizational goals. Flexibility is especially important in non-profit work, where priorities and resources may shift.
- Ability to provide support to participants requiring lifts and transfers, and personal care support
- Previous experience working with people with disabilities is an asset
- Reliable transportation is required
- Passion for the mission of supporting persons with disabilities.
- Experience in a supervisory role and/or summer camp work would be beneficial, but not a requirement

Compensation
$17.25 - $18.25 per hour
