ASL-English Interpreter (Term Full-Time)

POSITION TYPE: 3 Full-Time, Term Positions Available, with the possibility of an extension (anticipated October 28, 2024 up to December 19, 2025)
SALARY: $56,607 - $79,848 per annum
POSITION LOCATION: Notre Dame Campus (Winnipeg, MB)

DUTIES
Reporting to the Manager, Deaf and Hard of Services, the incumbent provides ASL-English Interpreting to Deaf students, staff, and faculty at RRC Polytech. Maintaining confidentiality and discretion in all aspects of work including the creation of, organization, management, and storage of confidential information is essential. Researching technical and complex information to provide accurate interpretation and work both independently and as part of a team in a manner that is conscientious of linguistic needs, and cultural variances amongst students, faculty, and staff are required. On-going engagement in professional development opportunities offered both internally and externally to the College is necessary to stay current in the field of interpreting. The incumbent must be a member in good standing of both the provincial (MAVLI) and national (CASLI) professional associations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate degree in a related discipline (Linguistics, Social Sciences
- Diploma from an ASL-English Interpretation program recognized by the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI)
- Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) membership and knowledge of the ethical and professional best practices
- Ability to assess consumer’s linguistic needs/preferences and adjust language use in the interpretation to accommodate the linguistic needs of consumers and conduct additional preparation, research, and consultation to ensure equitable access
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal and provincial legislation with regards to accessibility and human rights, and emerging trends in Sign Language Interpreting
- Several years’ experience working as an ASL-English Interpreter (post-secondary is preferred)
- Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality with a high capacity for objectivity, neutrality, and flexibility without compromising standards including professional code of ethics and College policies
- Ability to work independently and effectively within a team environment using good judgement to prioritize work
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to exercise tact, discretion and diplomacy recognizing the importance of relationship building with students, instructors, team members, external collaterals and College staff and leadership
- Experience building a respectful workplace culture that promotes diversity, learning and continuous improvement
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and experience working with individuals struggling with poor mental health or in need of urgent support
- Training in crisis response (e.g. Psychological First Aid, SafeTALK, Mental Health Training (e.g., Mental Health First Aid), Suicide Intervention Training (ASIST)
- Proficiency and experience in using advance features of Microsoft Office applications, remote communication platforms and College programs including MediaSite/MS Streams for recording and editing videos and capability of adding and editing closed captioning

- Member in good standing with Provincial (MAVLI) and National (CASLI) Interpreter Association
