Community Disability Services Practitioner - Arts Assistant

Chrysalis is a non for profit organization who provides services and support to adults with developmental disabilities in Edmonton and Calgary. In addition, we have two manufacturing businesses producing plastic and wood products.
The role of the CDSP Creative Arts Assistant is first and foremost a Community Disability Support Practitioner with a fine arts background and facilitation experience. This role works directly with People Accessing Services (PAS) introducing a variety of art forms, including but not limited to painting, crafting, creative writing, music, dance and performance. This role will work closely with the Program Team to work on PAS’s art goals identified through the Human Centered Design (HCD) process, using multiple artistic modalities to enhance their expression and experience in meaningful and supportive opportunities for their personal growth. It is a responsibility of the CDSP Creative Arts Assistant to ensure the safety and well being of all PAS and colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
- Help identify PAS’ personal and artistic goals and assess their skills and interests from a human-centered design (HCD) perspective
- Open the art studio daily and facilitate the creative arts program
- Work with individual artists on their art-related goals identified through HCD process
- Assist PAS in exploring a wide range of mediums and techniques, such as drawing, painting, photography, multimedia, sewing, pottery or any other specialties or areas
- Work closely with the Program Team on planning and organizing theme days and events, such as annual art shows, art exhibitions, and fun days
- Prepare and facilitate creative arts lesson plans including setup, facilitation and cleanliness of the art space that supports meaningful independence
- Explore resources and opportunities for PAS to participate and engage in art related events, sales, exhibitions, and workshops both in the community and in Studio
- Provide training to staff and volunteers who support people accessing service in the art studio
- Foster positive relationships with art communities, build a connection with venues for hosting our events and display arts created by Chrysalis artists
Requirements
- Post-secondary degree/diploma in Fine Arts, Recreation Administration, Education and/or a combination of relevant experience and education in a related field
- Strong working experience in facilitating art project, lessons and workshops
- Previous education and/or relevant work experience supporting people with disabilities would be considered an asset
- Highly collaborative and able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, and leveraging the skills of the group to further PAS goals
- Experience in art display, marketing, sales, and creative processes
- A general understanding of the broader range of community resources and partnerships available to support PAS participation and inclusion in the arts community
- Proficient with technology and online applications, specifically Google Doc, Sheets, Slides, Calendar and Gmail
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills are essential
- Successful time management skills with the ability to identify and prioritize demands and apply practices in some settings and environments
- A practical understanding of relevant general and organization-specific policies, procedures, operational protocols, legislation and employment standards, professional ethics codes and guidelines, contract terms and conditions, and other practice guidelines
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Search
- Compatible attitude and philosophy with Chrysalis values and mission

Pay: $23.74 per hour
