Transportation Design & Construction Specialist
Public Works - Transportation
Contract Full-Time; 13 Months
Pay Band: $89,469 - $111,834 per annum.
Work Mode: Hybrid (Minimum 1 days onsite weekly, plus additional days based on operational requirements)
Location: 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton, ON.
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week
Overview:
The Transportation Team at the Region of Peel is dedicated to ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable mobility for all residents and businesses. Our team focuses on strategic planning, development, and maintenance of a comprehensive transportation network that includes roads, transit systems, cycling paths, and pedestrian walkways. We design and implement infrastructure projects, manage traffic flow with advanced systems, and collaborate with local transit authorities to improve public transportation services. We actively engage with the community to align our initiatives with their needs and expectations.
The role:
Reporting to the Program Manager of Roads, Design, and Construction in the Transportation Division, this position is responsible for conducting research and providing expert analysis, interpretation, and recommendations on road construction products, methodologies, and initiatives.
What you will do in this role:
- Manage and administer various Road Capital Projects, up to a value of $5 million.
- Prepare, review, and analyze engineering design drawings and contract documents in compliance with current road standards.
- Prepare requests for quotations, tender documents and contract amendments, providing expert advice and direction to purchasing staff.
- Determine evaluation matrix, undertake the evaluation of detailed proposals, and conduct analysis for vendor procurement.
- Provide budget estimates and project scheduling to secure funding requirements in the capital budget.
- Control and monitor project budgets, cash-flows, schedules, project costs and tracks/reports on same. Review quantities, back-up for progress payments, identify discrepancies and make recommendation to resolve same.
- Negotiate project changes in scope and related extras to minimize Peel’s financial risk while maintaining the quality and schedule of the project.
- Prepare and execute communication plans for all appropriate project agencies and stakeholders as required.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships, liaise and negotiate with internal groups and external agencies to resolve project related issues, and obtain all approvals and permits prior to construction.
- Attend site meetings, prepare formal meetings notes/minutes and promptly distributes.
- Address inquiries, complaints and concerns raised by the Public and/or Councillors and prepares draft responses.
What the role requires:
- University degree in Civil Engineering and a minimum of 3 years directly related and progressive experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A preference will be given to candidates who possess a P.Eng or CET designation.
- Proven negotiating, planning, scheduling, financial and project management skills to manage vendors and contractors.
- Thorough knowledge and experience of road design practices and standards, related codes and environmental regulations, safety acts, tendering/contract processes, and contract administration.
- Demonstrated financial skills to prepare cost estimates and to control budgets and expenditures for capital works projects.
- Team player who contributes to multiple project teams and can provide technical expertise in road design and construction.
- Valid G driver’s license (in good standing) and access to own transportation
Skills/Abilities:
- Proven organizational and effective and efficient time management skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including MS Office, MS Project.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Work Mode & Job Location: In this role, you'll enjoy the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement. This means you'll have the ability to work remotely and on-site as needed, depending on operational needs, at the 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton and other water/wastewater worksites. The frequency of on-site work may vary from week to week, depending on operational demands, which can evolve over time.
It's important to note that your off-site work location must be within the province of Ontario. This ensures that we're compliant with all regulations and policies.
