The Immunization Services Division is a singular, self-sufficient, and integrated vaccination program within Public Health that works collaboratively with internal and external partners to improve protection in Peel against vaccine preventable diseases.
The Immunization Services Division requires a self-directed, flexible, and enthusiastic Public Health Nurse with strong communication, facilitation and nursing assessment and analysis skills to deliver services in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards for Immunization.
Team Specific Responsibilities:
- Administering vaccines in school and community clinics in adherence to Medical Directives and Program Policies and Procedures
- Assessing health and immunization history and eligibility of clients using information from several sources to determine whether client is to be immunized
- Coordinate and support vaccine cold chain maintenance during immunization clinics using the Provincial Program Standards and program policies and procedures related to vaccine storage and handling
- Work with other team members to organize, pick up, and drop off vaccine/clinic supplies on a rotational basis as needed
- Travel within Peel Region based on operational needs. This may include travel to multiple sites within a workday
- Office work may be assigned as needed
What you will do in this role:
- Apply knowledge regarding concepts of population health status, inequities in health, determinants of health, and strategies for health protection and promotion to guide practice
- Utilize research and evidence and apply critical appraisal skills to inform policies, programs and practice
- Provide health information, teaching and counselling to clients
- Use a holistic approach to assess the health status and functional competence of clients with consideration of the impact of the determinants of health
- Identify and analyze how clients' culture, attitudes, beliefs and feelings about health influence interventions
- Establish mutually determined goals with client, including outcome indicators and evaluative measures
- Facilitate client engagement in identifying and defining health issues using community development and community assessment skills
- Participate in the planning, developing, implementation and evaluation of community wide and site-specific public health strategies using Evidence Informed Decision Making (EIDM)
- Advocate for and contribute to the development of healthy public policy
- Collaborate with partners to identify and address public health issues and service gaps to achieve improved health outcomes
- Develop, foster and facilitate inter-sectoral partnerships and networks using team building, negotiation, conflict management and group facilitation
- Demonstrate culturally sensitive approaches and strategies with diverse populations
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
- Promote awareness of the Region of Peel and Public Health services
- Participate in research, quality assurance initiatives, and mentor-ship opportunities as appropriate
- Adhere to public health and nursing ethical standards and principles
- Fulfill legal and professional obligations and responsibilities in accordance with relevant legislation and departmental policies, procedures and medical directives/acts as an ambassador for the Region of Peel, Public Health Services and Public Health Nursing
- Perform other duties as assigned which support the organizational goals
- Respond to public health emergencies, significant events and incidents as required by the Health Protection and Promotion Act and Emergency Standards
What the role requires:
- A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or equivalent recognized by a Canadian University
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse by the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Current basic cardiopulmonary life support certification - for healthcare provider
- A valid G Driver's License and access to a vehicle
Skills/Abilities:
- Experience in public health immunization is preferred
- Proficiency in French and/or additional languages is an asset
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- Experience working with children and young adults is an asset
- Proficiency in nursing documentation standards
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships
- Analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
- Advocacy, negotiation and conflict management skills
- Assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation skills
- Relevant computer skills (MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel) and the ability to work with Ministry databases (Panorama)
- Effective public relations, presentation, public speaking, group facilitation and diplomacy skills
- Effective organizational and time management skills
- Ability to apply appropriate theory and learning principles to practice
- Knowledge of Peel’s diverse community and associated health impacts
Work Mode & Job Location: Immunization Clinics throughout the Region of Peel (Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon). Travel from site to site in a timely manner throughout the work day is required.
Availability Requirements:
a) Minimum availability required 4 days per week (Monday-Friday)
b) One operational Saturday per month as needed with varying hours (9:00 am to 5:00 pm)
c) Shifts are primarily during the school year; from Monday to Friday and are approximately 5-6 hours, based on your role and school hours. Please note that each day may result in differing hours based on school size, hours and location. For example:
- School clinics between 08:00 am to 4:30 pm
- Evening Community Clinics between 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm
- Saturday Community Clinics between 09:00 am to 5:00 pm
- Shift availability and duration may vary
