Position: Fitness & Wellness Instructor

Assignment: Hourly
Pay Rate: $25 - $35 per hour (training); $17.67 per hour (floor rate). We also offer access to our superb sport, fitness, and recreational facilities.

The Position:
Reporting to the Senior Coordinator, Fitness & Wellness, the primary responsibility of the Fitness & Wellness Instructor will be to ensure the delivery of quality group fitness classes by leading members through accessible group exercise classes.
The Fitness & Wellness Instructor will promote members’ participation in all membership-based programs and activities offered at Abilities Centre, as well as develop relationships and collaborate with other departments to identify participant pathways that align with member goals.
What You’ll Do:
- Instruct. You will support the set up and take down of group fitness classes.
- You will adapt all exercises to fit a variety of abilities in all classes.
- You will exercise creativity and innovation to assist the Senior Coordinator in the delivery of high-quality fitness classes.
- You will enhance member experience by keeping members engaged and encouraged during group fitness classes.
- Culture. You will cultivate an inclusive and welcoming environment resulting in an exceptional customer experience.
- You will use strong problem-solving skills and ability to pivot services as needed.
- You will establish rapport and maintain effective relationships with members, staff, volunteers, visitors, and community partners.
- You will foster a work environment that values and encourages teamwork and empowerment.
- Other. You will collaborate with Senior Coordinator and other staff to handle non-routine customer service requirements with diplomacy and tact.
- If scheduled, during floor shifts you will monitor client activity in the fieldhouse (which includes the courts, tracks, cardio, free weight, and Move Strong areas), giving guidance and assistance to members when needed.
- You will attend staff meetings, professional development workshops and organizational-wide trainings.
- You will also assist with administrative activities, as needed by the Senior Coordinator, along with other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Bring:
- Education and Experience.You are attending or are a graduate of university or college program in Kinesiology, Physical Education, or Fitness related field.
- You are required to have a valid Group Fitness Certification from CSEP, CPTN, Can Fit-Pro, or similar association.
- You have more than one year’s experience instructing group fitness classes and you are comfortable with leading exercise sessions in front of large groups. Experience instructing Spin, Yoga, Zumba/Dance Fit, Total Body Fit, and/or HIIT is desired.
- Technical Skills and Knowledge. You have knowledge of inclusion, accessibility, and accommodation.
- You have strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- You are proficient in Microsoft 365 and have knowledge of ACTIVENet or similar recreation management software.
- Professional Skills. You are self-motivated, results oriented, shows great initiative, and able to work independently without close supervision.
- You are an effective team player with positive attitude, interacting well with members and fellow employees.
- You have good interpersonal and relationship-building skills demonstrating rapport with people of diverse backgrounds.
- You are dedicated to a customer experience that exceeds expectations.
- Administrative Requirements. You are required to have a current and clear criminal record check for the vulnerable sector.
- You are required to have a current and valid First Aid and CPR ‘C’ / AED certification.
- Availability. You are available to work weekdays, evenings, and weekends - you will have a consistent schedule to instruct weekly group fitness classes.
