Position Overview
We are seeking a Sous Chef to support the Camp Chef in leading meal preparation, kitchen operations, and food service at Camp Horizon, located in the breathtaking Kananaskis Country. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a collaborative team environment and contribute to the expansion of our events program alongside our Events Lead.
As the Sous Chef, you will play a vital role in maintaining kitchen efficiency, assisting in menu development, and ensuring high-quality meals that accommodate a wide range of dietary needs, sensitivities, and restrictions. You will also help implement an events menu, enhancing special retreats, corporate gatherings, and camp experiences.
This is a seasonal position from ASAP to August 30, 2025, with the potential for extension, although continuation is not guaranteed.
Key Responsibilities
Kitchen Operations & Culinary Excellence
- Assist the Camp Chef in preparing nutritious, high-quality meals for campers, staff, and guests.
- Lead meal service, ensuring food is well-prepared, visually appealing, and meets dietary requirements.
- Prepare meals that accommodate all allergies, intolerances, religious and cultural restrictions, and personal dietary choices (e.g., gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, vegetarian, vegan, Halal, etc.).
- Support in menu planning, including collaboration on an events menu with the Camp Chef and Events Lead.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen, adhering to Alberta Health Services (AHS) food safety standards.
- Assist in food inventory management, storage, and waste reduction.
- Assist the Camp Chef with ordering food, kitchen supplies, and cleaning products in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Communicate with suppliers to confirm availability, delivery timelines, and substitutions when necessary.
- Help receive, inspect, and properly store incoming orders, ensuring product quality and accuracy.
- Help monitor inventory levels and track usage to reduce waste and avoid shortages.
Team Collaboration
- Work closely with kitchen staff and the Events Lead to help develop and execute creative dining experiences for special events.
- Uphold a positive and inclusive work environment, supporting a diverse team.
Compliance & Food Safety
- Ensure adherence to all food safety regulations, sanitation protocols, and AHS standards.
- Help manage kitchen equipment maintenance and food handling procedures.

Qualifications & Requirements
Mandatory Certifications:
- FoodSafe Level 1 Certification
- WHMIS Certification
- Standard First Aid & CPR Certification
Experience & Skills:
- Minimum 1–2 years of professional cooking experience, ideally in a camp, hospitality, or high-volume kitchen setting.
- Strong understanding of and commitment to accommodating special diets, food sensitivities, allergies, and cultural food preferences.
- Previous experience working as part of a kitchen team; supervisory experience is an asset.
- Familiarity with Alberta Health Services regulations for commercial kitchens.
