The Senior Accountant is responsible for all BCAA entities’ accounting and financial reporting activities, including:
• daily accounting activity
• transaction processing
• treasury
• financial reporting
• financial systems and internal control processes
• tax and regulatory compliance
• regulatory filing
The position is responsible for ensuring that effective accounting policies and practices are maintained throughout BCAA in order to ensure the integrity of the financial information of the organization. This position is also responsible for safeguarding BCAA’s assets through timely and accurate recording, reconciliation, and reporting. This role is accountable for the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements along with the corresponding tax and regulatory filings and account analysis.
The Senior Accountant is a key technical resource for the Accounting team, serving as a coach and guide to his/her peers.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Accounting & Reporting
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, consolidations, and note disclosures
• Prepare associated transaction and account analysis of all reported financial information
• Prepare and review all G/L account reconciliations including sub-system to ledger reconciliations
• Implement continuous improvement throughout the financial reporting cycle to optimize accuracy and efficiency
• Evaluate and recommend new accounting policies as required in accordance with ASPE and IFRS
Audit & Internal Controls
• Assist in the completion of all external audits for the BCAA group of companies
• Lead the preparation of the annual working paper package for the Association’s external auditors
• Recommend action plans to address the auditor’s management letter points and to reduce auditor adjustments
• Identify and mitigate possible control failures/areas of concern through regular reviews with the Managers of Accounting & Tax, Treasury, and Internal Audit
Treasury
• Supervise the Association’s cash receipts and disbursements functions (Banking, A/P and A/R cycles)
• Prepare reports to monitor the performance of each of the Association’s investment portfolio Fund Managers against established performance criteria
• Prepare rolling cashflow forecasts
Taxation & Regulatory Filings
• Maintain BCAA’s compliance with current tax legislation (income and all indirect taxes) through the preparation of tax returns, supporting schedules and reconciliation of tax returns to financial statements
• Prepare regulatory filings associated with BCAA Insurance Corp. according to statutory deadlines
• Prepare responses to requests for statistical financial information (e.g. Statistics Canada) as required
Scope:
The Accounting department is part of the Finance division.
Relationships:
• Reports to: Manager, Accounting & Tax
• External: Auditors, FICOM, Tax advisors, Treasury providers (bank, fund
managers, and investment advisors)
• Other: Cross-functional relationships with all levels of BCAA team members
Qualifications:
Education
• Bachelor's Degree in Business/Commerce with a concentration in Finance/Accounting from a recognized university
• Completion of the CPA designation
Experience
• Minimum 4 years of accounting or auditing experience
• Experience in multi accounting standard and multi business unit environment with a high transaction volume
• Demonstrated ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals and tax bulletins
Other Skills
• Strong technical accounting skills, current with the latest Accounting and Taxation pronouncements and emerging issues
• Excellent planning, analytical, problem solving, investigative, troubleshooting, and decision making skills
• Passion for coaching and mentoring fellow team members
• Demonstrated ability to be innovative and enhance processes to changing business needs
• In-depth knowledge of financial reporting systems and experience with ERP systems
