JOB DESCRIPTION
Duties:
Distribution Standards has an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Engineer on the Overhead, Underground, and Customer Service Connections Team. This team creates distribution equipment and construction standards to allow repeatable design of our distribution system.
In this position, you will:
- Develop BC Hydro construction and design standards with a focus on customer electrical service connections.
- Plan and execute field trials, evaluate new equipment, and work with field crews and vendors to approve equipment for use on the distribution system.
- Provide technical subject matter expert support to Distribution Engineering and Distribution Design & Customer Connect.
- Provide regular and high impact mentoring and development, supervise and review work of junior, intermediate, and specialist engineers.
- Act as a technical leader/expert internally across functions and business units, and externally, and function as an expert resource responsible for providing professional/technical advice on complex issues.
- Build and maintain relationships with and support groups across BC Hydro including Revenue Metering, Field Operations, Engineering, Design, Safety, Procurement, Asset Investment Management, and Grid Operations.
- Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders including Technical Safety BC, municipal electrical authorities having jurisdiction, and service entrance equipment manufactures.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate or Post-Graduate Degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred, or other relevant discipline may be considered).
- Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) or another Canadian provincial engineering association.
- Specialist Engineer applicants require a minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering experience in engineering design with a specific emphasis on customer service connections ranging from single phase 120 V to three phase 35 kV. Candidates with lesser experience may be considered at a lower level.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and deliver complex utility and distribution projects and engineering solutions through strong project management skills and a customer service attitude.
- The ability to investigate, analyze and solve a variety of engineering problems, many of which are of a challenging and unusual nature.
- The ability to manage relationships and work closely with stakeholders to drive innovation, find engineering solutions that add value, and address competing interests at least life cycle cost.
- Demonstrated commitment to learning and development.
- Demonstrated behaviour that upholds a culture of safety.
- Well developed verbal and written communication, presentation, leadership, interpersonal and facilitation skills, and ability to work effectively in a team environment are essential.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint).

Flexible work model role definitions

Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home based on the type of work they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for each position and the operational requirements. Employees also have the right to work full-time from the office if they prefer. All of our roles require at least some in-person time.
IBEW/Field – No option to work from home
Resident – Works primarily (4+ days per week) in the office.
Hybrid – May be able to work from home up to 3 days per week.
Remote – Works from home 4+ days per week
