JOB DESCRIPTION
Duties:
The BC Hydro Engineering Team provides engineering expertise and support to hydroelectric facilities, high voltage transmission, substations, and distribution facilities. Engineering also provides project management, design, contract, and construction management as well as maintenance and emergency response services to the company and select external clients.
We currently have two exciting opportunities for Intermediate and Senior Level Engineers in the Transmission Engineering team. These positions will be responsible for design of transmission cable systems, rating studies, development of design and maintenance standards, EMF and AC interference study and worker safety procedures.
The key accountabilities for these positions are:
- The candidate will investigate, analyze, and solve a variety of engineering problems, many of which are of a more challenging and unusual nature.
- Develop innovative engineering techniques, devising new approaches and applying existing criteria in novel ways.
- Manage medium and large sized projects and work packages, write technical specifications and standards, prepare estimates
- Provide technical and site support during the installation, commissioning and maintenance of cable systems.
- Review work of the team and of consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, and adherence to accepted engineering practice.
- Impart engineering knowledge and encourage the professional development of engineers as well as coaching and mentoring of junior staff is a key responsibility in this role
- Manage client relationships to ensure their needs are met and to work closely with stakeholders to drive innovation, find engineering solutions that add value, address competing interests at least life cycle cost, and to reach consensus.
- Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues to determine relative priorities, assess the impact of work on others and resolve issues of concern.
- You may perform the Owner's Engineer Lead role on projects where some or all the engineering work is done by a third party such as an outside consultant or equipment vendor. As an Owner's Engineer Lead, you will coordinate and lead the internal review and acceptance of work designed by a third party.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors' Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.
- Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C (EGBC).
- A minimum of 8 years' (Senior Engineer) or 4 years' (Intermediate Engineer) experience in the electric utility industry.
- Experience in transmission overhead or underground design preferred.
- Experience in lightning, grounding, limits of approach, live line working, insulation coordination, electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and AC interference (also known as electromagnetic compliance - EMC) is preferred.
- A commitment to ongoing personal development and participation in professional societies
- Excellent leadership, communications, technical writing, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary project teams as the lead engineer or project engineer coordinating resources and
- managing relationships.
- Preference will be given to candidates which have some experience and knowledge on one or more of the following:
- Design, installation, operation, and maintenance of transmission cables systems.
- Design, testing, and maintenance of cable hydraulic systems.
- Assessment of thermo-mechanical behavior of cables including sheath fatigue.
- Experience with applicable computer applications (ETAP, CDEGS, Cymedist, Comsol, Python, etc).
- Participate in, represent organization, steer and monitor industry developments through organizations such as IEEE, CEA,CEATI, CIGRE, EPRI, CSA

* A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain your Class 5 Driver's License: In good standing.

Flexible work model role definitions

Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home based on the type of work they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for each position and the operational requirements. Employees also have the right to work full-time from the office if they prefer. All of our roles require at least some in-person time.
IBEW/Field – No option to work from home
Resident – Works primarily (4+ days per week) in the office.
Hybrid – May be able to work from home up to 3 days per week.
Remote – Works from home 4+ days per week
