Practicum Student, Public Health Inspector Assistant

Status: (4) Contract Full-Time (Duration: May 11, 2026 – October 2, 2026)
Salary Range: $26.62 per hour

Location: 7120 Hurontario Street, Mississauga; along with various worksites in Peel Region
Hours of work: 35 Hours per week

As a team member of the Health Protection Division, you will be responsible for applying preventive and public health knowledge, techniques and skills to reduce the incidence of communicable disease, food-borne illness, and health hazards in the community. You will be working in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards and associated protocols, guidelines, and reference documents, the Health Protection and Promotion Act and related Regulations, and any other pertinent legislation.The public health inspector assistant will obtain training relevant for certification by assisting public health inspectors within the division.Specific duties include conducting inspections and investigations under the Health Protection and Promotion Act in accordance with its regulations, as well as applicable Regional by-laws. Inspections and investigations will be conducted in program areas such as food safety, safe water, beaches, health hazards, infectious, vector-borne and zoonotic diseases (including rabies), infection prevention and control, tobacco/vapour control, and emergency preparedness.
The successful candidate must work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and all policies and procedures as outlined by Peel Region.
If you are enrolled in or recently graduated from a CIPHI‑approved Environmental Health program and you possess:
- A student membership in good standing with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI)
- Excellent oral and written communications skills
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in a collaborative team environment as well as independently
- Knowledge of relevant public health legislation, Health Protection and Promotion Act and the Ontario Public Health Standards
- An ability to maintain confidentiality regarding client records
- Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Access to a reliable vehicle with a valid G class license
- A willingness to work some evenings and/or the occasional weekend
- Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias
- A satisfactory Level 1 Criminal Record Check obtained directly from a police station (third-party background checks will not be accepted)

Work Mode & Job Location: In this role, you'll enjoy the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement. This means you'll have the ability to work off-site and on-site as needed, depending on operational needs at the 7120 Hurontario Street, Mississauga office and various other locations throughout Peel Region. The frequency of on-site work may vary from week to week, depending on operational demands, which can evolve over time.
It's important to note that your off-site work location must be within the province of Ontario. This ensures that we're compliant with all regulations and policies.
